This week I hosted an event on behalf of the Epilepsy Society where their research into the impacts of the use of anti-seizure medicine during pregnancy was launched.
There has been some important economic research done into the lifetime costs of disability, and we know children born having been exposed to medication like sodium valproate are likely to suffer from a range of health conditions.
I was first involved in this issue as a result of the work done by In-Fact and the incredible campaigners Janet Williams and Emma Murphy, who have been steadfast in their determination to raise awareness of the dangers of sodium valproate for unborn children, and to get redress for those affected. It has been a long journey, and we all appreciate the immense work of Baroness Cumberlege on the review into medical devices and medications, “First do No Harm”.
