This week at PMQs I raised the issue of disposable barbecues and sky lanterns, both of which can add to the very high fire risk in the tinder dry conditions we currently have. The record temperatures this week, and the prolonged dry spell, have seen an increase in fires, putting an immense strain on the fire services. It is crucial we all try to minimise risk, and I am pleased to see a number of local stores joining some national chains to refuse to sell these items.
As the Tory leadership contest continues we have now reached the membership vote stage, which I hope will see more light than heat. Of course I am disappointed that the process has whittled it down to just the one candidate from Hampshire, after the original three in the race, but it is now out of my hands and very much the responsibility of Party members.
It was lovely to see the carnival return last weekend, and a huge thanks to the volunteers who made that possible. I can't remember which year we had torrential rain throughout, but 2022 was a stark contrast with blazing sunshine, which made the Old Cadets costumes look a little warm! This weekend Nomads have their summer show at Woodley Village Hall which I am really looking forward to.
