This week my committee published a report into Black Maternal Health and the shocking truth that black women are 3.7 times more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts. That meant a whirlwind round of media interviews through Monday and Tuesday as every broadcaster picked it up.
However on Monday night I took some time out to discuss the online safety legislation with Lord Grade of Yarmouth, former Chairman of the BBC and current Ofcom Chair. The responsibility for policing the new legislation will fall to Ofcom and it was interesting to hear his vision of how that will happen. There have been concerns raised as to whether Ofcom is adequately resourced to do so, but he seemed confident they were in good shape to be able to do so.
After a fairly (very) miserable season I'm off to the Saints Foundation this weekend to hear about all the good work they have done through the previous year. People don't often hear about the grass roots work our local football team does to support young people with literacy, help the elderly with keeping active and promoting men's health. The Foundation does some amazing work across the City, particularly tackling loneliness in the elderly, and I always love to hear about the new initiatives and successes.
