Westminster this week has been dominated by the conclusion of the King's Speech debates and the vote on both Labour and SNP amendments regarding the situation in Gaza. The SNP in particular were calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
I thought John Healy, the Shadow Defence Secretary, summed up the issue really very well on the media on Thursday. He made the very accurate point, that we all want this horrendous conflict to end, we want hostages returned to their families and we want aid to be able to get into Gaza to alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis. But there is a difference between those who are seeking a sustainable negotiated solution, a pause in the current situation which would allow aid into the region, and those filling my inbox with increasingly aggressive demands that Israel should give in to terrorists.
We saw the return of David Cameron to the political stage, as Foreign Secretary, and I know he will be able to bring experience and wisdom to his new role. We need wise and cool heads in the world now more than ever before, and I am sure he will use every diplomatic connection he has to urge moderation on the Israeli Government. He does not need an amendment in Parliament in order to do that.
